Notable Black Pioneers with Illinois Connections
(1899 – 1975) A research chemist and a pioneer in the chemical synthesis of medicinal drugs from plants. His research resulted in over 130 chemical patents. He was one of the first African Americans to receive a doctorate in chemistry. He was the first African American chemist inducted into the National Academy of Sciences. Percy was born in Montgomery Alabama. After attending the local elementary and high school, he was accepted as a probationary student in Indiana’s DePauw University. Ultimately, he excelled, graduating as valedictorian of his college class. Julian earned a master’s degree at Harvard University. Denied access to their PhD program, he earned his doctorate at the University of Vienna in Austria. His pioneering work in plant synthesis laid the foundation for many pharmaceutical advances, food products, paints, and fire-resistant foam.
