Timothy Duane Hardaway, Sr. is an NBA Hall of Fame honoree whose outstanding career in basketball made an amazing impact on hundreds of American youths as they tried to mimic the crossover dribble he made famous. A native Chicagoan, Tim Hardaway, was born on September 1, 1966 to Donald and Gwendolyn Hardaway. It was no wonder that Tim would be a great ball player. His father was known on the courts of Chicago’s south side for his basketball prowess. Tim Hardaway was a graduate of Carver High School in Chicago, but coaches had started noticing this point guard’s skill during his elementary years.
Knowing he had talent and was hard-working on and off the court meant that Tim’s love for the game was shaping his destiny. Carver had become a powerhouse in Illinois basketball since being the first African American school to win the state championship in 1963, but Tim Hardaway was not one to sit and wait for the colleges to notice him. He was the leader of his
high school team and insisted that the coaches “up the game” by playing their Carver Challengers against the best of the high school teams. Soon it was obvious that Tim was one of the top players in the city and that he would find a career in the game he loved so much. After high school, Tim played with the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and in 1989, was a first-roundpick by the Golden State Warriors.
During his amazing and illustrious career, Tim also played for the Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, and Indiana Pacers. Over his 13-year career, this five-time NBA All-Star was also selected for the All-NBA Team. In the 2000 Summer Olympics, Hardaway became a gold medalist with the U.S. basketball team. In 2022, Tim Hardaway was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame. Despite the fame he has achieved, Tim has always given back to his community. As an NBA player, he would regularly return to Carver High School to encourage students to dream big. While he may walk with the giants of Basketball, Tim Hardaway demonstrates that common touch each time he makes his way to Chicago to visit the community where he grew up and share in the joy of lifelong friends.
Timothy Hardaway and his wife, Yolanda Adkins Hardaway, have been married over 30 years and have three amazing adult children: Tim Jr., Nia, and Nina. Their son, Tim Jr., inherited the basketball talent of his family and, in 2013, was drafted by the New York Knicks. Today he plays for the Detroit Pistons.
